Starting in late 2025, all directors of UK-registered companies will be required by law to verify their identity. This change, led by Companies House, is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act and aims to make UK companies more secure, transparent, and trustworthy.
Who Must Verify?
All existing directors
Newly appointed directors
Some Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) and company secretaries
What Is Director ID Verification?
Identity verification confirms that a person is who they say they are. Going forward, a director cannot be appointed, and company filings will not be accepted, without a verified ID.
How Can You Verify?
There are two official methods:
Online via Companies House (using GOV.UK One Login)
Link: Verify your identity with Companies House
Using the GOV.UK ID Check app (free mobile app by HMRC)
For Android: Download from Google Play Store
When Does It Start?
The requirement is expected to take effect in late 2025, with further details to be confirmed by Companies House. Early preparation is strongly advised.
